The first-generation rechargeable alkaline technology was developed by Battery Technologies Inc in Canada and licensed to Pure Energy, EnviroCell, Rayovac, and Grandcell. Subsequent patent and advancements in technology have been introduced. The shapes include AAA, AA, C, D, and snap-on 9-volt batteries. Rechargeable alkaline batteries are manufactured fully charged and have the ability to carry their charge for years, longer than most NiCd and NiMH batteries, which self-discharge. [1] Rechargeable alkaline batteries can have a high recharging efficiency and have less environmental impact than disposable cells." A number of the older battery powered "portable" televisions used alkaline batteries because they held their rated voltage longer than NiCad batteries. As alkaline rechargeable batteries start to "go", the voltage drops off rapidly and the television would basically stop working until the battery was recharged. A NiCad has the voltage drop off a lot more gradually and the picture on the television would start to shrink and distort. The manufacturers much preferred the set to stop working indicating the need for a charge rather than have a very distorted picture.

Currently my emergency light works approx 1:45 mins, if i connect another rechargeable battery to the existing one can I expect it to work longer and not damage the charger?

Yes,it will work longer but for the charger I don't think it will hold the extra battery!(Put the battery in parallel with the old one.Use the same kind of battery!!!!)
